Downsides of the Motorola V3x

August 7th 2006 09:01
Hey all,

Sorry to have fallen off the face of the earth like that but shortly after my last entry I feel ill and have spent the last week juggling recovery, uni and work. Tuesday in particular I slept for at least 20 hours, my very fortunate, but only day off from things.

Anyway let’s get back onto the disadvantages of the V3x!

The one major Achilles heal of the Motorola V3x is the battery life. For those coming from a 2 or 2.5G handset don’t expect the V3x to sustain for as long as your old phone.

The battery life of this handset will depend on a number of factors first and foremost is the software version. I don’t know in depth why software version would matter, but I have spoken to people who have said upon changing to certain software has given them more (or less) battery life than they originally had with it.

Secondly, reception, from what I have heard, does play a minor part in how long the battery will last for any phone on any type of network. The worse your reception, the shorter your battery will last due to the constant searching for network. But for most people this really won’t affect them.

The V3x in particular will probably last about 2-3 days on standby with some low usage. However if you call for one to two hours a day expect to be charging every night or carrying a spare battery with you as calling has the highest drain on the battery out of all it’s functions.

Coming previously from a Nokia phone, when writing SMS I have been use to the T9 dictionary. What was good about it was that it had the ability to add words to the dictionary that were previously not available. Motorola have attempted to go one step further by having a smart predictive text by skipping that step and any words you frequently spell will automatically be added to its dictionary and the more you use it the higher in the chain of words it will be listed.

In theory it sounds good, but in practice I haven’t had as much luck. Most of the time I have found that words I have “added” have disappeared after a while and words that I use the most get pushed off from the top of the list. An example is the pronoun “I” has been replaced with the number 4 in attempts to “spell” “4real” which I have never used before! T9 I have to say is a far better predictive text software.

The final section of the disadvantages is a bit of a varied one. All I said in my outline in the previous post on the V3x was along the lines of the “small idiosyncrasies of the phone”. Essentially what I mean by this one is Motorola has tried to make our lives easier but haven’t completely thought it through.

First off there is charging. Which you plug your phone in on charge, no matter what profile you are on, be it vibrate or vibrate and ring it will immediately change to loud. My guess the reason for this is that if we were to put it on the charger you would walk away from the phone and miss any phone calls if you had your phone previously on vibrate. I guess for some people this is a pretty funky feature if they are in the habit of forgetting.

For those of us however, who don’t forget and/or prefer their phone on vibrate and ring there is no reprise, no way to turn this “extra” feature off!

Secondly, I love the ability to have different ringtones set for different people who call me. But I’m not sure which genius thought to leave those ringtones on for receiving SMS from that person as well. An SMS ringtone should be no longer than half a second, but when you have ringer ID on and have a 3 minute song attached to that person, you get a 3 minute notification that they have sent you an SMS.

My girlfriend has the same function on a Sony-Ericsson but they actually have a standard type ringtone for the SMS even when ringer ID is on.

There are a few more little niggly software things that Motorola could have done better. But these cover the majority of the gripes!

Only one summary entry for the V3x to go! After which I will do a post dedicated to helping you to understand cap plans and finding the perfect cap for you!
