Free Gifts With Mobile Phones - Scam Or Real?
May 5th 2010 15:04
Getting a free laptop, games console or GPS system with a mobile phone contract might sound too good to be true (and in some ways it is, as I’ll discuss later). There are actually many deals like this available though offering a wide range of different gifts. In this post I’ll be talking about some of the main gifts as well as why you need to be careful when getting them.
Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii
If you want to liven up your evenings then getting one of the three major games consoles can be a great way of doing so. If you shop around for contracts that are at least 18 months in length then you can find some that come with a free console. Make sure you read about which games (if any) are included and which accessories you’ll need to buy for the console.
GPS Systems
A few years ago it was very common to see GPS systems given away with mobile phones. The problem is that a lot of modern phones have GPS built in as standard and hence these deals are now less common. You can still find them, however, and they’re usually included with cheaper contracts as they aren’t as expensive as other options.
Laptops
It’s true; you can get a free laptop with a mobile phone in some cases. You shouldn’t assume that it will be a low quality model either. While you won’t find a top of the range laptop available for free there are some medium spec ones available. Laptops are usually only included in higher price contracts though.
Other Gifts
There are numerous other items offered with mobile phones. For example, some phone retailers will provide instant cash back of a certain amount. Others will offer free line rental deals or an LCD TC. It always pays to ask a phone retailer which deals are available at the moment as they change regularly.
Too good to be true?
It’s a sad fact of life that nothing is really free. That doesn’t mean these deals are scams though – far from it. The downside to getting a free gift with a contract is that inevitably the handset you receive will be lower quality. If you aren’t interested in getting a top of the range mobile phone then this might not be a problem. If, on the other hand, the phone is more important to you than the gift then it’s worth avoiding these sorts of deals. The only exception is if you’re willing to spend money on a long term contract.
