3D games on phones

I don't know about you, but I think that many of the 3D games on the iPhone store don't have the same charm and appeal as the 2D games. Obviously, certain games need to be 3D for various reasons, but I wish developers would stick to 2D where possible. Not only is it easier to see what's going on in a 2D game, but it also tends to prevent the kind of slow down that ruins games.
Take the game I recently bought as an example - a well known 3D rugby game. It is fantastic that such a game can run on the iPhone in the first place, as it really shows the future of gaming is going to be on mobile devices. The problem is that the game could almost certainly have been made in 2D, aside from a few features such as kicking perhaps, and it would have been a lot better had it done so.
The game is pretty good looking for a 3D iPhone app, but the problem is that because of the relatively small screen it's hard to see what's going on. In 2D, the game would have been much easier to follow. In fact, I may even have a go at making a 2D version of the game myself to see if it could be done! Scrums, running, knock ons etc could all have been done in 2D.
A good example is Angry Birds, which features 2D graphics but because of this could afford to really get creative with its characters. Games such as this, and I’m including the old worms series too, always suffer when they make the switch to 3D, so I hope the Angry birds developers realise this.
What do you think about this? Am I just living in the past, or do other people agree that graphics are getting in the way of some games?
On a completely unrelated note, please bring out a Minecraft app for the iPhone! I know it would be hard to do for various reasons, but it would still be a great game to play on the train.
